The doctor Crângu Alexandru Bronitki would go caroling and singing the Star song with the little children, with his grandchildren. He would gather a lot of children. There was no need to make a special ?Star?. He already had the star on an umbrella. And he would close the umbrella when he got out of the house and open it when he came in, and there you have it ? the star. Grandfather and grandchildren would go from house to house, where he knew they would be received properly. It was wonderful! He also had two girls from the Conservatory; he had an extraordinary carol choir.? (P. P., 143) Merisor had made a star out of a Chinese marble game. Inside the game there was a star-shaped piece of card. The card was covered with colored tinfoil saved throughout the year an carefully kept for the holidays. In the Christmas tree, I would hang tinfoil spiral decorations as tinsel. Merisor placed in the middle of the star an Italian manger of the Lord?s Birth. The handle of the star was made out of an enormous Czech pencil covered with tinfoil. I dressed the children in their homemade padded clothes, Merisor put a Bulgarian hat on, and gave the children a small boy bag from Maramures and off we went caroling with me as a bodyguard because they feared they would be attacked by the little Gypsies who stole from the carolers. First, we went to the house of a friend who was decorating her Christmas tree. We received nuts covered with honey and apples. Then we got to the houses on the Lutheran Street: a collector of paintings, two old ladies. The old ladies blessed the parents who taught their children how to stick to tradition. I would wait for them in the street, in front of the block of flats, and the little Gypsies that passed by me would sing carols to me. On our way home, we met a group of students, near the students? hostel in Moxa, who asked us to sing a few carols to them. As one can see, the schedule invented special caroling formulas, that are not strictly oriented towards the house, but towards the person, irrespective of the place he/she might find himself/herself: in the subway, in the bus, in the tram or in the street.
